What are asphalt shingles?

Asphalt shingles are an asphalt-based roofing tile, developed in the United States in the early 20th century. They are the world's best-selling roofing material — particularly in North America — and have grown in popularity in Finland in recent decades.

Asphalt shingles resemble roof tiles in appearance but are considerably lighter and easier to install. Their particular advantages are quietness in rain, flexibility in frost and a wide range of styles and colours.

Standard or laminate asphalt shingles?

Standard shingle (SBS)

  • Lifespan 25–35 years
  • Price approx. 35–55 €/m² installed
  • Single-layer construction
  • Smooth or lightly profiled surface
  • Most affordable option

Laminate shingle

  • Lifespan 30–50 years
  • Price approx. 55–90 €/m² installed
  • Double-layer construction, thicker
  • Deep 3D profile, resembles roof tiles
  • Better frost resistance

Finnish brands: Katepal and Kerabit

Finland's market leader is Katepal, which has manufactured asphalt shingles in Tampere since 1949. Katepal's products are specifically designed for Scandinavia's demanding climate and are known for their excellent frost resistance. Another significant player is Kerabit (formerly Icopal), which offers a wide range of both standard and laminate products.

The advantage of Finnish brands is that products are tested and certified for Finnish climatic conditions. The quality of cheaper imported products varies considerably.

Maintenance and upkeep

Maintenance schedule

  • Annually Visual inspection, check for loose or damaged shingles
  • 5–10 yrs Professional inspection — surface condition, moss growth
  • As needed Replacement of individual shingles — easier than replacing tiles
  • Shaded areas Moss and algae treatment

When should you choose asphalt shingles?

Asphalt shingles are an excellent choice for detached houses, holiday homes and outbuildings. They are a great option when you want a tile-like appearance at a lower cost, or when the roof structure cannot bear the weight of heavier tiles. The laminate shingle is the most recommended choice for Finnish conditions — its better frost and weather resistance pays for itself in a longer service life.

Advantages

  • Quiet in rain
  • Easy to install — suitable for DIY
  • Good frost resistance in laminate grade
  • Flexible — follows movements in the roof structure
  • Reasonable price
  • Wide range of styles and colours

Disadvantages

  • Shorter lifespan than tile or metal roofing
  • UV radiation deteriorates the surface over time
  • Not suitable for low-pitched or flat roofs
  • Moss growth possible in shaded areas
  • Limited installation experience in Finland compared to Central Europe
