Metal roof
Metal roofing is one of the most common roof types in Finland. Profile steel sheet suits steep pitched roofs and standing seam metal roofing works for almost any pitch. Steel sheet is long-lasting, lightweight and cost-effective.

What is a metal roof?
Metal roofing refers to roofing sheets made from steel, aluminium or titanium zinc. It is one of the most common roof types in Finland, with its popularity based on affordability, light weight and versatile applicability. Metal roofing falls into two main categories: profile steel sheet and standing seam metal.
The greatest advantage of metal roofing is its weight — only 4–8 kg/m² — making it an ideal material for replacing older, weaker roof structures. A lightweight covering requires no structural reinforcement.
Profile steel or standing seam?
Profile steel sheet
- Lifespan 30–50 years
- Price approx. 55–90 €/m² installed
- Requires min. 14–18° pitch
- Surface coating renewed every 10–15 years
- Most common and affordable metal type
Standing seam metal
- Lifespan 50–100+ years
- Price approx. 110–160 €/m² installed
- Works from as low as 6–7° pitch
- Nearly maintenance-free when properly installed
- Titanium zinc = over 100-year lifespan
Metal roofing material options
The most common metal roofing material in Finland is galvanised steel sheet with a polyester paint or polymer coating to protect against weather. Aluminium is lighter and corrosion-resistant but more expensive. Titanium zinc (an alloy) is the premium choice — it develops a natural protective patina over time and lasts virtually indefinitely when properly installed.
Maintenance and upkeep
Maintenance schedule
- Annually Visual inspection, drainage functionality, fixing condition
- 5 yrs Flashings, penetrations and joints checked
- 10–15 yrs Profile steel surface coating renewed (generally not needed for standing seam)
- As needed Treatment of rusted areas and resealing of flashings
When should you choose a metal roof?
A metal roof is the best choice for budget-conscious construction or replacing an old roof without structural reinforcement. Standing seam metal is also an excellent option for low-pitched roofs where tile or asphalt shingles are unsuitable. It is also an ecological choice — metal is a fully recyclable material.
Advantages
- Most affordable roofing option
- Very lightweight — suitable for older structures
- Fast installation
- Wide range of colours and profiles
- Snow slides off easily
- Recyclable material
Disadvantages
- Shorter lifespan than tile or standing seam
- Noisier in rain
- Risk of rust if surface finish deteriorates
- Requires regular inspection and repainting
- Thermal expansion can loosen fixings
